A Short Film by Steven Lamar

Rushing to make his dinner date, Braven is derailed by his sister’s slip up, dragging the past into his present and testing who he’s become.

Director’s Statement

STEPS is about the moment the past interrupts the present. On his way to a first date, Braven is blindsided by a family slip-up that reopens old wounds, forcing a choice: protect his peace, or face his past with compassion and grace. I wanted the audience to feel like a fly on the wall, watching the quiet tension of a slice-of-life night unfold in real time: what’s unsaid, what’s avoided, and what finally surfaces.

I also wanted to create space for Black queer men to see their internal struggles brought to life on screen, offering a moment of visibility, and inviting others to better understand the private battles that often go unseen. Told with restraint, STEPS explores identity, boundaries, and the messy work of becoming.

My hope is that audiences leave with a question that lingers:

Would I help the person who hurt me?
What old wounds am I carrying right now?
